In the worse case of brown-on-brown crime involving Cubans since Gloria Estafan ditched the Sound Machine, Jose Canseco casually mentioned during a radio show that Alex Rodriguez will soon be under the same steroid cloud that Barry Bonds now finds himself. We don’t disagree—any weirdo who answers his hotel room door at 2 AM in a suit as A-Rod did when the Red Sox came to negotiate is probably up to no good. But it’s Canseco—no one listens to him, right?
Wrong. Instead of being dismissed as a roid-raged lunatic, Canseco has somehow found himself to be the prophet of truth. He’s even got a popular southern white guy to be his disciple. Atlanta Braves slugger Larry “Chipper” Jones has come to Canseco’s defense, telling the press:“I don’t doubt it,” Jones said. “There’s been a lot of validation to some of the things that Jose Canseco has said over the years. At first when it came out a lot of people didn’t want to give him a lot of credit for it. But a lot of it has been proven true. Now, when he opens his mouth, people listen.”When the grand oracle of steroid abuse in baseball is a man who A) took steroids himself, B) sexed Madonna, C) once had a baseball bounce off his head and over the wall for a home run and D) wore that horrible black mesh button down shirt, you know we’re in trouble.
