We always thought that putting a baseball team in Miami was just a bad idea. Braving the humidity and giant flying cockroaches for three hours doesn’t sound too appealing to us. It turns out that Miamians feel the same way we do.
“The announced attendance Monday at Dolphin Stadium was 12,345, but the crowd was estimated at about 1,000 and after a 40-minute rain delay in the seventh, there were probably 200 fans left in a stadium that seats more than 67,000 for baseball.
“Yeah that’s very [tough],” [Marlins pitcher Scott] Olsen said of the tiny crowd. “We go into New York and Philadelphia and there’s 40,000 fans and we come here and there’s two. It’s very tough.”
Yes, Scott, but you get to play in Miami! Players in New York and Philadelphia have to deal with louts in the stands and even bigger assholes in the media. Mike Lupica will come over to your house and berate you in front of your children. The worst you’ll get in Miami is Dave Barry comparing you to a bad Cuban sandwich.
