There have been a lot of opinions about what punishment Bill Belichick should receive for Pats-gate. But what Mike DeCourcy over at the Sporting News has suggested could be the biggest blow to the NFL. He says that the league should follow Serie A’s handling of their crooked referee scandal. Football following fútbol—oh, the humanity!
DeCourcy says the Patriots should be docked points, the way Juventus, A.C. Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina were. But since the N.F.L. doesn’t use points, the Patriots would have victories deducted from their regular season record. DeCourcy says three would be appropriate. “If they finish 13-3, their official record would be 10-6,” he writes. “Whether they would qualify for the playoffs, and where they would be seeded, would be based on the official record.
We totally agree, but why stop there? With so many sports scandals, there are tons of punishments to crib notes from. Make Belichick and the team pay a $100 million fine while meeting with George Mitchell about dogfighting. And then make him and Ric Flair take on Team Pacman for the TNA Tag Team title.
We think it’s only fair.
