In The Name Of The Father, The Son, And The Holy Realm Of Lucha Libre

A church in Oakland, California treated their constituency to some Lucha Libre sweattasticness when a host of Mexican and American wrestlers got together for a fund-raiser. The event drew about 200 people, mostly Latino parents and children, who jeered, spat, and partook in family-fun smack talk. (We can imagine the line for confession must have stretched blocks after this event.) Wrestlers such as “Fuerza Infernal” and “La Migra” showcased their skills, smacked their lonjas together, and riled up fans with enough slapstick to make Cantinflas smile in his grave.

More than two dozen wrestlers performed at the noon show — the majority of whom were born in Mexico, and some of whom traveled to Fruitvale from Mexico just for the event. While many of the American wrestlers performed bare-chested, without masks or makeup, the Mexican wrestlers preferred to don the full costume.

Aren’t disguises in the presence of “La Migra” always the rule?
