Legendary boxing promoter—and pimpin’ hustler—Bob Arum has revealed his intent to put together a mega-bout between Filipino brawler Manny Pacquiao and cross-dressing welterweight boxer Oscar De La Hoya. Only problem? De La Hoya outweighs Pacquiao by about fifteen bushels of palm leaves. “No worries”, says Bob Arum, who usually pinned Goliaths against pee-wees back in the day.
“I come from an era where fighters fought above the weight all the time. Where great fighters like Sugar Ray Robinson went up and fought the light-heavyweight champion (Joey Maxim). Where middleweights fought heavyweights…So, you know, this is nothing new,” he said.
But do those outweighed boxers have full mobility post-fight? Can they still speak? Are they eating through a tube for their remaining years? Arum isn’t concerned about that.
“Manny Pacquiao brings a lot to the table against Oscar. He has the speed, a good punch. He takes a good punch. He may be outsized by De La Hoya but remember when he fought (Marco Antonio) Barrera, he went into the ring at 144 lbs.”
Along with the weight difference, Pacquiao has never faced a guy wearing only mesh shorts and lipstick. Edge goes to De La Hoya for sure.
