The United Nations is usually in the role as a preventer of cruel and unusual punishment. But last night, UN representatives were the victims of it as they had to watch the New York Knicks—as a guest of team owner James Dolan—drop their seventh game in a row to the Golden State Warriors, 108-82. While some of the delegation kept up their diplomatic appearances, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wasn’t having any of that.
Ban, who was excited at attending his first sports event at the Garden, said after the game: “I’m sorry that the New York Knicks lost. They’ve been playing poorly, very poorly, and (I’m) disappointed.”
Damn, it’s one thing to get dissed by ESPN; it’s a whole other matter to get it from the UN Secretary-General. But the key to last night’s loss was that Dolan offered the basketball inspectors season tickets if the Knicks had won. We’re not saying that the delegates didn’t want to submit to a season of bad basketball, but when the Zambian rep continually taunted Zack Randolph, we knew what was up.
