When you want to get things done right, you do them yourself. Our dad taught us that, but we still can’t change a tire because our AAA rates are just too damn cheap: so why bother? Yet, in an unprecedented move, Mexican international Nery Castillo has been loaned out by his Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk to the land of tea and WAG’s due to his own monetary contribution. The 23 year old will play for Manchester City come January and his pockets will be a little lighter because of it.
“Nery Castillo’s desire to make this deal happen has been extraordinary,” City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh said. “He has made a significant financial contribution in order to complete this move by paying most of the loan fee himself. This proves how much he wants to play for Manchester City in the Premier League.”
We don’t have the figures on how “significant” the contribution was, but compared to fellow national teammate Memo, Castillo’s lack of slacker-tude is commendable. So pull out that checkbook if you want to head to Europe’s elite, Memo.

Dude’s gotta save some money for the eyebrow waxin’… sheesh!

what are you talking about? Eyebrow waxing is like $2 in any China town in the world.

Nery’s the hardest working dude in Mexican futbol, outside of Mexico! Who goes to play in Ukraine!?! In a couple of years, homeslice will be bringin’ his game, even with that serial killer facemask.
Gerardo Torrado has my vote for hardest working Mexican futbolista in Mexico. He’s got mad hustle and ‘fro. What say you?

Hardest working? Please, he whined and bitched when he was sold to the Ukrainain team….not an attribute of some who is hard working…
It is a good move, Man City is in fourth place, and can climb atleast two more spots… good luck for nery…

@latinogamer: You’d piss and moan if clubs had your career in your hands and could let you languish just because they didn’t like you, and you maybe wanted some time out on the pitch. It’s just as hard of work to get yourself into a more agreeable situation.
Dude hustled and shelled out of his own for a LOAN…just a chance at getting out of a shitty contract and no guarantee of being sold again (how terrible does that sound?). What kind of a free agent in the U.S. would do such a thing? A-Rod’s overpaid ass ain’t got shit in comparison.
All said, though, point taken: he could tone down his diva-ish antics and just play.

Can I get a vote for A-Rod to wear a Nery inspired mask? It’s only fair if Bonds can wear all that Terminator-inspired plastic on his arm.

Point is, he didnt do shit in Champions League.
Posted by latinogamer | December 18, 2007
He didn’t play in the Champions league because he was benched indefinitely for pulling this little stunt. The Beeb alludes to it in their coverage of Donetsk Shakhtar’s loss to Celtic.

look at all the champions league games, he did not start once. He only scored two goals, one in a friendly and another in the champions league pre-group match. The game you linked was played on Nov 24, Castillo had been on the team since August, and the Champions League started in the same month as well. He never lived up to the hype in Shakhtar, and that fact he did not play agaisnt Celtic and AC Milan is a mute point since he would of done shit. We will see how well he does with Sven, he does not pull with the diva attitude of a non proven player.
so what are you trying to prove anonymous?
Posted by latinogamer | December 18, 2007
I think Nery rocks. He can shine anywhere. The Copa America was proof of that. I think Anonymous was trying to point out that he didn’t do anything because he was benched. It was a rebuttal to you saying he didn’t do shit in the Champions League. This is so much fun.

@latinogamer: I accidentally posted “Anonymous”…my bad. Didn’t mean to ghost post.
I stand corrected on the timing of his November Surprise realtive to his benching. But Nery hasn’t gotten many starts since signing on. And that he was only played for 78 minutes in 4 Champions League appearances is just as ridiculous.
My question is: why is Shakhtar not playing someone they have obviously invested considerable money into? He’s proven productive (especially at Olympiakos), though not quite Pichichi material, and he has a really bright future. Totally good move on his part. And it still takes hustle and work to get out of a shitty situation.
And yeah, Maverick pretty much read me right, as much as I got the facts wrong.

And Sven is a good coach to play for. I’m still amazed how he was able to get his new players gelling together so quickly this year.

@pocho
I agree. he would have been better off at Fenerbahce if he was looking to change shitty leagues. On the other hand, Olympiakos treated that kid like a god. Sven will recognize his skills. Hopefully.

Sven is a ball breaker and it is hard to make it in the EPL. Especially since Castillo only played in Greece, which had a really light schedule when it comes to the top three Euro Leagues. I see Nery only playing the rest of the season, going to back to the Ukraine and eventually being sold for way less he was paid for to some small club in Spain. He does not currently have the fitness to hit the EPL at full stride, look how long Tevez took to get use to the EPL game. To be honest, the only place I see Castillo do well is with the national team, which is good for Mexican fans but bad for Manchestery City fans.

Nery wasn’t raised in Mexico, first off and most of his pro career since about 15 or so has been in Greece, where he played for seven years. In all those years he’s also played in the Champions League. Contrary to all of the negatives, he will succeed in PL. Why, because the coach likes him first, secondly because he has speed, skills and lots of determination. The coach at Shaktar did not want him. It was the team owner who demanded him and got him. The coach always alienated him and Nery is not one to keep his mouth shut. He’s short tempered and always wants to play just as much as a ronaldo or ronaldinho or any other star. He will lift man city to the next level, being a second or third place. He will not do it alone but as a team and yes he’s a ball hog but that keeps the other team off balance and after him, leaving other players open to score. The premier league isn’t that superior or fast paced. He’s tireless as you will come to recognize.
