The 2006 World Cup flourished with some goal-scoring gems, including Maxi Rodriguez’s magical volley against Mexico in extra time. It’s no surprise that Argentina are atop the FIFA world rankings when they have witchcraft talent like this on their team. We scored a goal like this once…on FIFA 2007, the Playstation 2 version and we were really proud of that.

Oh…the agony….and the ambivalence. To lose on such a beautiful goal is torture. Or delight. Oh I don’t know anymore. It makes me want to go to see a dominatrix to get myself feeling straight.
I was in a sports bar in a Boston hotel watching this goal; the teevees were beaming in the signal from two different feeds. In my enthusiasm, I was watching the screen with the earlier feed, the just thinking that maybe, just maybe El Tri would get a shot at making the second round of the knockout stage. And then, of course, this pearly turd of a goal killed me. I saw the goal on the first feed, and three seconds later, all the Argentines and the hot cougar-like women were cheering and gloating. Ugh.
When my girlfriend and I were heading home, we were going through the nearby mall. While going up a flight of stairs, some Mexican kids in their Tricolor paraphanelia saw me in my Mexico World Cup t-shirt. We just looked at each other, and one of the guys in the group just said, “Nos chingaron.”
Word up, carnal.

My uncle banned us from mentioning the game for a month. It made the bbq’s for the rest of August very weird.

@Maverick: hahahah…kinda’ like the way my family would deal with my totally awesome and super-gay cousin! Neither pretty nor fun.

Yeah, we kind of have one of those too. But seriously, my uncle almost spit on me when I wore my Mexico t-shirt after that.

Maxi’s last great goal, cause he hasnt done anything lately

Damn…you gotta make sure he’s blacked out from Tricolor games by beer or boxing glove. Or you just gotta Tevo that ish and watch them like they’re skin flicks or something.
Hell hath no fury like a pissy uncle. Especially if you turn to him when you want what your dad won’t give you when you’re up a creek: money and support.

@latinogamer: Not anything that spectacular. But he’s performing solidly. Captain, second most used player on CA Madrid, third on the goal scoring list for the team in La Liga. That, and he has at least another World Cup in him, possibly two. I wouldn’t write him off. I’m not sure he’s a great, though. But damn, what a goal!

His performance in the Madrid derby last weekend was lacking, where as the other CA Madrid players stepped up their game, Maxi was been far from his 2006 World Cup form. Maybe he stopped using cocaine, like Diego.
Weird, you know, Ronnie hasnt played well since that tourney, maybe it is some type of world cup curse….Maybe the media should be taking pictures of Maxi’s waist….thats right, no one cares. He had an amazing goal, but no one will remember him outside of Mexico and Argentinians will only bring it up when they want to make fun of us….i cry inside

Maybe he’s getting his just due: not all of them can be super-stars. That goal could’ve just been the most he gets for being the bane of Mexican soccer fans everywhere.
