David Beckham Concedes Defeat To Fabio Capello

There are only two ways David Beckham could have handled his omission from Fabio Capello’s first-team roster: either belligerently attack Capello’s decision by kicking balls at a full-size cutout of the Italian, or concede defeat and assume the role of has-been. Okay, maybe he’s not a “has-been” yet, but, well…the argument can seriously be made. David Beckham wrote on his blog (weeee!) that his admiration for Capello hasn’t receded, stating that he agrees completely with the former Real Madrid coach’s decision.

“I am sure you will have read a lot of Mr. Capello’s call to leave me out of the squad, but in truth I admire him as a manager and respect his decision,” Beckham wrote. “In his explanation, he said that it was purely down to match fitness and that it was unfair to the other players, competing week in and week out for their clubs, to include me in the squad.”

It’s definitely easier to deal with your failures when you know exactly what went wrong. But Beckham should feel the pressure. Playing in the United States has so far depleted his chances for an international title. If becoming a rapper is the Los Angeles motive, then he’s well on his way. If he’s aiming for 100 caps, then time will grant it. We’re sure of it. But he’s left England dry when it comes to international championships. Because of that, Beckham will be ranked far below the 1966 English heroes he admires. At least he’ll have his Armani ads to remind him of his good days.
