There are precious few qualities you look for in a friend. Things like loyalty and knowing when to shut the hell up. Unfortunately for Alex Rodriguez, he picked a doozy of a BFF in Mike Borzello. Borzello, who was until last year the Yankees’ bullpen catcher and now does the same for the Dodgers, is noted for being A-Rod’s “confidant, counselor and confessor” during his tenure with the Yanks. So of course when Jose Canseco started tossing the Yankee’s name around in the same breath as steroids, the New York media decided to converge on Borzello for a comment. And as a good friend does, he came out in defense of A-Rod. Yeah, some would say he really went beyond as a friend… although not really above and beyond.
In four years I was with him 24 hours a day, and not one time did I ever hear, see or get wind of anything having to do with performance enhancing drugs, steroids, HGH, anything,” said Borzello, now the Dodgers’ catching instructor.
No way, with as much as this guy trusted me, would he have kept that part of his life secret from me. He trusted me with everything, and I was with him every day all day long. It would have been impossible to show me everything behind the curtain except for this. He is not that bright to be able to pull that off.
Pfft, that idiot? Puh-leeze… but he’s totally good people.
