Speculations as to why England lost to France this past Wednesday revolved around analysis regarding Fabio Capello’s unorthodox formations and his decision to take a traditionally deep positioned England defense, move them forward and see them scatter like frightened sea otter when an impending attack was near. It sounds so complicated. All we needed was a bashful gesture from one of England’s prized sons, Michael Owen, to disclose why England’s headed down the loo.

When that did not work, Capello reverted to the traditional 4-4-2 — but, even then, Michael Owen was not sure what was being asked of him.

And when he was quizzed about what Capello was trying to achieve in the match, the striker seemed at a loss.

Newcastle star Owen said: “I don’t know, you’d best ask him.”

Twice more when asked to explain the manager’s instructions and gameplan, Owen shrugged and gave exactly the same answer.

Since creativity is out the window, Capello should find a way to translate kick ball in goal from Italian to English. Anyone can understand that.
