In the greatest post-career move since that kid from The Toy started directing porn movies, EA has chosen Brett Farve to grace the cover of this year’s Madden 2009 game. Boy were we off. It seems that the game’s 20-year anniversary was enough of a reason to put him on the cover, which is fair. But then again, we never thought players that were dead to us were in the running.
Instead of going with a bright young star of the game, as has been the tradition since Madden 2001, they chose a man who had been a dominant force in the NFL over much of the 20 year history of the video game, former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre… [who] becomes the first non-active player to appear on the game’s cover.
“Madden NFL Football and Brett Favre are sports icons who have set the standard and revolutionized their positions within their respective genres,” said Madden NFL Executive Producer Dale Jackson. “Brett Favre is a perfect fit for the Madden NFL 09 cover, as he epitomizes everything the franchise has stood for the past 20 years - longevity, excellence, and a love of football.”
So did these guys, who we’d rather see on the cover of Madden ‘09 and played a bulk of their years in Madden-time. Sorry Brett, you’re a bit overexposed, as opposed to these only mildly-exposed players:
