GM-owned Vauxhall will introduce sign-reading cameras in its new Insignia cars next year. The windscreen-mounted camera takes photos at 30 frames per second (30 photos a second, in plain English), and can read speed limit signs from as much as 100m (328 feet) away. It’s supposed to help keep you safe on the road&mdah;suppose you miss the most recent speed limit sign and are doing 60 mph in a school zone. Not only could you get a ticket, but, more importantly, you could hurt someone.
The installed camera is connected to instruments in the dashboard, which then display the speed limit clearly. Limit changes are even proceeded by an audible warning. Seems Vauxhall really thought this out.
As you might expect, the car is only planned for the UK right now, but the technology itself is said to work in continental Europe, too.
About time we see car manufacturers using all this hi-tech wizardry to improve safety. Job well done.
Now let’s see it actually released.
