So check this. In a 1994 Shell Caribbean Cup qualifying showdown, Barbados was on the verge of qualifying for the finals after taking a 2-0 lead on Grenada. They needed to beat Grenada by two goals, and nothing less, in order to progress. Grenada, on the other hand, needed only a one goal differential loss (or a win, of course) to reach the finals of the Shell Cup. Barbados was well on their way with that 2-0 lead until, in the 83rd minute, Grenada pulled a goal back, basically sending them into the finals because a 2-1 defeat was enough. So, what did the Barbados team do?
Well, they freakin’ used mathematics, added and gambled. Instead of going out like chumps, Barbados decided to score an own goal and send the game to overtime, tied 2-2. Why would they do that? Because for some freakin’ reason, the Shell Cup overtime counts one overtime goal as “two.” So, you guessed it. Barbados scored a goal (worth two) and went on to the finals, where they were promptly eliminated in the group stages. Crazy, ey? Now explain this to someone when you’re crunked and see if it makes sense. Kthxbye.
