MLS and the Chicago Fire went an entire year without so much as a drop kick from Mexican international soccer stud Cuauhtemoc Blanco, but if rumors are true, then Blanco’s notorious temper is as ripe as a three-second fart. During Tuesday night’s US Open Cup clash between Chicago and D.C. United, Blanco engaged in a skirmish with United defender Marc Burch.
The fight occurred late in the first overtime period, and both Blanco and Burch were ejected for violent conduct. Blanco attempted to punch a ball held in the left hand of Simms, with the blow instead striking the D.C. midfielder in the ribs. Burch retaliated by pushing Blanco over. Then Blanco appeared to hit Simms in the face. He also head-butted a D.C. United game-day operations employee as he was being escorted off the field, according to sources close to the situation.
Keep in my mind that these started out as rumors, until someone leaked a video onto YouTube (it has since been removed), which confirms a nightmare scenario for Chicago Fire officials.
Chicago Fire Vice President of Communications Gregg Elkin, however, said Blanco did not head-butt anyone. “[Blanco] did stop at the bench to pick up whatever and the guy got on him, and when he turned to leave, his forehead did graze the cheek or jaw area,” Elkin said.
Well, the exclusive footage of Blanco kicking, punching, somersaulting in the air and eye-gouging Burch below seems to clearly portray otherwise, Mr. Elkin.
That video was so much better than all the “Three Stooges” we searched through. If the head-butting is true, will this ruin Blanco’s rep in the States? It’s really easy to vilify an angry Mexican man, ya know.
