Manny Being Miami? It May Be That Way...

So if you haven’t noticed, what with the flurry of trade chatter on the wire, the MLB trading deadline is today at four EST (right before Jude Judy!). While we have one big trade essentially done (Ken Griffey, Jr. to the White Sox), the big fish out there is Manny Ramirez. And while his name has been linked to teams like the Dodgers, Diamondbacks and even the Yankees (!) for the past week, the latest word has it that his final destination might be even further south—the Florida Marlins.

The Palm Beach Post reported on its Web site that the Marlins reached a tentative agreement to acquire Ramirez from Boston in a swap that would send outfielder Jeremy Hermida and prospects to Pittsburgh, who would trade outfielder Jason Bay and left-handed reliever John Grabow to the Red Sox. The Post attributed the information to an unidentified baseball source.

Ah yes, the “unidentified baseball source” that has people not saying this trade won’t go down. But we say it should because it makes sense for all parties involved (well, except for Pittsburgh, who are in a perpetual state of rebuilding). The Red Sox get rid of their unhappy superstar Ramirez; Ramirez gets to reboot playing for a team where expectations are so low that if they miss the post-season, it’s not the end of the world, and he can go on to a contender next year; and the Marlins get that possible final piece of the puzzle to win their third championship in 11 years for pretty much nothing (the Sox would pay his salary).

Apparently, sometimes trades make too much sense. Again, unless you’re the Pittsburgh Pirates.
