Whas Happened In Sports This Weekend
- Boxing: The scorecards had Antonio Margarito down two rounds in the sixth, but something surged through the Torrance, Ca native, something that provided enough grit to take down the reigning, undefeated welterweight champion. After Miguel Cotto rumbled through the first few rounds, Antonio Margarito proceed to demolish his visage with upper-cuts and penetrating jabs. Who’s next: Oscar De La Hoya? Ha! There’s no way De La Hoya is stepping into the ring with this machine. Antonio Margarito defeats Miguel Cotto 11th Round TKO. [USA Today]
- FMF: Take a nice deep breath of Mexican soccer’s fresh air because we’ve got a new season underway. Highlight of the weekend had to be Santos V America. Unless we’re the only ones that get a kick out of seeing Memo Ochoa and Oswaldo Sanchez go at it at opposite ends. The youngster definitely got the best of the veteran this time around. America 3, Santos 2. [ESPN]
- MLB: It took ten consecutive starts for Clayton Kershaw to finally record a win with the Los Angeles Dodgers. After six scoreless innings of good pitching, Kershaw left the game in the lead and the Dodgers never looked back. LA 2, Washington 0. [Mercury News]
- Tour de France: Since all of the Germand, Italians and Americans are falling out of contention because of performance-enhancing drugs, the Spaniards (they’re just as guilty, actually) are reaping the rewards. Carlos Sastre became the third Spaniard in the last three years to win the Tour de France. [NY Times]
- FIFA Beach Soccer: Brazil have won their third Beach Soccer World Cup after beating Italy 5-3 in Marseille. We guess this means the FIFA Beach Soccer Girls are no longer going to shake their thangs. Boo. [CBC]
