Who Do You Root For: Adoptive Nation, Or Birth Nation?

We’ve scoured the net incessantly to bring you cold hard evidence of that time a decade or so ago when Oscar De La Hoya was caught in a controversy in which he arrived to a boxing match wearing Mexico/USA shorts. The fight was against legendary Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez (1998) and the match signaled the arrival of the new regime in boxing. It also revitalized the identity crisis most immigrant children face: which country does one affiliate with? We think both is fine and so do most countries that find dual citizenship to be a perfect option. However, what the hell do you do when cheering for a national team. Blokes at The Chicago Tribune and asked Oscar that question:

“You have to cheer for the U.S.,” De La Hoya told me. “I was born here. “My heart is always with Mexico too because my parents were born there. It’s tough. It’s always a great game.”

That’s cool. Now, this can apply to Colombians, Brazilians, Peruvians, etc, and whether your cheering for your birth country or not, it’s a painful decision to make. So, instead of cracking off like some spazzed out lunatic (you know, the usual stuff you see here), we thought this was a great question to ask our readers. What country do you root for: adoptive or birth country? Poll below.

Comments

Oscar’s diplomatic comments suggest that he wants everybody to like him. Cute, but no churro dude. Besides, why should having an allegiance to a country over a game that people play (repeat, play) matter?

Give me El Tri any day. Otherwise my grandpa will do barrel rolls in his grave….and I just don’t want to do that to the old coot’s bones…

México, sin duda.
