ESPN Opens A Pandora's Box By Making The Red Sox A Punch Line In The Manny Ramirez Trade

For those who’ve forgotten, ESPN does have a playful side. The fact they haven’t made a good Sportscenter commercial since Charlie Steiner implored us to “follow him to freedom” was made moot when their quick witted ad agency started posting these in laundromats all throughout Los Angeles. The cards read “Lose a sock, Boston? ESPN joins Los Angeles in welcoming Manny Ramirez.” Hm. Wonder how quickly those can get recycled once Manny realizes Manny actually doesn’t want to be in LA?

Acting quickly following the trade of the Red Sox’ Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Ddgers, last Thursday, ESPN agency Ground Zero, by noon Friday, had plastered laundromats around LA county with lost socks affixed to a tag which read, “Lose a sock, Boston? ESPN joins Los Angeles in welcoming Manny Ramirez.” Quick thinking and wit works just about every time. Nice work.

Or devious plan? Is this ESPN’s way of giving those sick of 24-hour Yanks and Sawx coverage on the channel a freakin’ bone? Just wait till Terry Francona refuses to do one of those in-game interviews because of this. It’s like playfully chiding your girlfriend in front of your friends to show you’re not totally whipped… but having to make up for it by rubbing her feet everyday for the next week.
