It looks like the 31-point blowout the US Men’s Basketball team handed the Chinese delegation yesterday won’t be the most embarrassing thing the home bball team will face this Olympics. That honor of offense goes to the Spaniards, and even without playing a game. This image is from a full page ad that ran in the sports daily Marca today. As you can see, it’s Spain’s Men’s basketball team slanting their eyes to show the world that respect for other teams is out the door. They’re going for gold, baby—feelings are for Bronze medalists!
No one involved in the advert appears to have considered it inappropriate nor contemplated the manner in which it could be interpreted in China and elsewhere. No offence (sic) was intended by the advert, but whether the Chinese see it that way is a different matter and it is likely to provoke more criticism at a delicate time for Spanish sport.
The failure to recognise the potential consequences is striking in the light of the problems Spain has had with issues of race and the Spanish Olympic committee’s continued desire to host the Games in Madrid in 2016 or 2020.
Oh, Spain. When will you learn that sports are about respect and not making fun of Asian basketball players… or black race car drivers… or black soccer players… um, they might want to rethink that 2020 time-frame. It’s going to take a lot more time before they stop being their own worst enemy.

um…Guerrero’s comment left me at a loss for words, it was so good.
Some Spaniards don’t seem to like Ecuadorians, either.

If you think they’re making fun of Asian basketball players you’re misunderstanding the whole thing.
You should be ashamed of you lack of cultural sensitivity towards Spaniards.
Also, the Spanish lisp is a myth. Or a “mis”, if you prefer it without the “lisp”.

are you actually defending this? even the slightest remark can inadvertently offend a different culture, how is this supposed to be anything other than a blatant attempt at making fun of how chinese, or asian, people look? if i were chinese, i’d be pretty upset if someone made fun of the way i looked.
the fact that they even tried to do this, and that you’re defending them, seems to point to a clear “lack of cultural sensitivity”….
but then again, this isn’t the 1st time spain has done this sort of thing.

I cant believe that the spain men’s basketball team would do something like this. I thought that the olympics was to bring all the people in the world together and make friends not make fun of what race someone is or make fun of what someone did. They should be very ashamed of their selves!

Unconceivable!

Well Juan, if you have the foresight to see that it can be interpreted in many ways then why couldn’t the dirty, ole Spaniards? Sorry…had to throw the “dirty, ole” part in there.

The Spanish team is ignorant and disgusting. The fact that to this day they claim they don’t understand what’s wrong with the picture is testament to their ignorance. I guess that’s how everyone of color is treated in Spain, like some amusing circus monkey joke. I hope the US team pounds these cowardly idiots out of the tournament. And Ling Ni, sponsor of the Spanish team, you might be a decorated Olympian but you’re less than gifted in IQ b/c you don’t even know what racism is even when it smacks you in the face.

Whether the photo is racist or not, it’s rather hypocritical of the Chinese to cry “foul.” Their word for European tourists or foreigners is best translated as “Big Noses.”

All this talk of misinterpretation is ridiculous. This Spanish may not be racist as a whole. but they’ve used up all their good will when it comes to the sheer disrespect of others cultures. They show up to Formula 1 races wearing black paint on their faces with shirts that say Hamilton’s family. Hamilton was the black British driver who was expected to challenge their driver. And to my knowledge this wasn’t a small group of individuals. When Britian or France come into to town to play soccer the hospitatible Spainards affectionately shower the opposing countries black players with monkey chants and the occassional nigger. They are so warm hearted aren’t they, and oh yeah the list is much longer. I don’t know if the perceived ignorance of Spain is true, but the point is they lost the benefit of the doubt sometime ago. I mean if President Bush solved our dependancy on foregin oil, would he make you forget all of his other miscues?

It´s a pleasure reading all these Spanish racism issue coming from people that didn´t find movies such as 300 offensive+racist. Very kind coming from someone who are not comfortable with the dumb-american cliché. Have any of you ever been in Spain? Do you know that this is one of the most visited countries in the world?. Spain is an open country full of africans+asians+south americans; A Statistic: Madrid is the 2nd most populated by ecuatorians city in the world just after Quito, the capital cityl of Ecuador. So that has to be due to the fact that we shoot them at sight in the street, huh?
All of you that talk without knowing our country first hand can bend over and suck my average-sized cock (sadly I´m not african enough, oh, that´s a racist comment on black people´s oversized genitalia cliché, silly me, I´m just Spanish, you know…)
Posted by round-eyed freak | August 16, 2008
One of the Spaniards defended themselves saying that if he met a tall guy and tiptoed it’s not offensive. That’s like saying if you met a black and painted your skin black it’s not offensive. For people that think that they blew this out of proportion, if the Olympics were held in Africa and Spain painted their skin black for a photo, how do you think that would play out? Even if it was a joke, how could they not have realized that something like this would be looked upon negatively by the world, especially after the formula 1 incident. They would not even publicly apologize, but go on saying that nothing was wrong with the picture. Pau Gasol just lost a fan.

Juan gives Spaniards and Latin Americans a bad name. I am Spanish and own up to the fact that this is a racist/culturally ignorant thing to do. While I don’t think our culture hates everyone else, we definitely view them as exotic, different, and non-integrated in our culture. No matter what, no one can become a Spaniard unless they are European and have been living there for generations. We have our immigrants but they are marginalized. I think the majority of Spaniards have lived in a closed society for so long, it is only recently that our country has had many visitors and immigrants. It will take some time. But I think more people should admit it for what it is. I think some Spanish are angry because they feel that U.S. and U.K. have a lot of racism too, so why are they criticizing us?
Posted by Luis Manuel | August 19, 2008
I’m not going to defend Spain, here a black person (or a Catalan for what is worth) would never be able to run for president.
But you people are taking it too far. Maybe for US people this is insulting but in other countries it has no offensive meaning at all. Do you realize there are other cultures out there?

Time-slip, if you will, back to the 1950-1960’s. The boss (of course, male) walks into the office, and pats his female secretary’s rear end. He says, ” I like them round and plump.” Now, someone from the 21st century tells this boss that he has done and said an awful thing, and he is being downright sexist.
His response: “I was giving my secretary a friendly greeting. It was just harmless fun. It is absurd for anyone to make a big thing of it. How could women possibly take offense at this? I’ll have you know that I am friends with many women!”
Dear stupid Spaniards, don’ t you think it’s about time you learned that it is offensive when the people you direct your words and actions think it’s offensive. The one dishing it out has no say in whether people should be offended or not.
Join us. We have already moved into the 21st century. Hope you can catch up.

i live in spain, in barcelona actually and i have been here for 3 years teaching adults english, im leaving soon because i cant handle the pure shameless racism here anymore. The things that my students say have led me to throwing quite a few of them out of class, its crazy how some of them think. They have no problem at all saying things like “We hate Arabs here, but we´re really integrated” They think that because they´ve allowed a few immigrants in, stuck them all in one area here and given them jobs like selling beer on the streets that they are integrated. You only have to watch the telly here to see it, a Japanese programme here is not called its name but “yellow humor” its insane. They also call the local shops run by Asian people here, the Paki shop. They told me it isnt offensive in spain to say Paki. I asked them if they say it to the face of these people and they said no. I asked why, they couldnt answer, they hadnt realised the connection that it was offensive and therefore racist.
The only defence that I can think of is that Spain is 30 years behind a lot of other countries due to franco, but its not in the dark ages. However, the education here and even the news and media is appalling.
Hopefully there will soon be a change, but it will take a really long time…..

I’m Chinese and looking at these pictures of these athletes making “slanted eyes” gestures brought back PAINFUL memories of when I was a kid in elementary school and the other
students at school would make fun of me and other Asian students by making their eyes slanted and laugh at us while they are doing it. God created us the way we are, we have no control over that.
How childish of the Spaniard to do this. Someone should tell them
to grow up. They are not in elementary school anymore.

Oh yes, the Spaniards are very ignorant people, that I can’t deny, and they think it is ok to make such photos… but people here are giving very much importance to this photograph yet still remain silent about more severe mattters such as the Guantanamo Concentration Camp, the bombarding of Bagdad, and so on.
I don`t believe the Spaniards are more or less racist than anybody. What I think is that they aren’t having so much trouble hiding that fact. So you should apologize for the racism in your own country before judging and condemning others.

Why don’t the Chinese basketball team respond by wearing wigs with long curly hair (as in Carlos Puyol/ Rafa Nadal), Make sure it’s greasy for full effect. Fake tans and hairy chests and even hairier arms (and that’s just the girls!!!).

Yes, the photo was stupid and wrong. It is insensitive. But do you really confuse a joke with real-factual racism? Can you infer from the photo that Spaniards are racist? I lived and studied in the US, and believe me, I never have been in more contact to ACTUAL racism (against foreign students and immigrants) than in any other place in the world. Never in my life. I have met good people everywhere. But about racism, look, the US has perfectioned it to a science. BTW, myself have been part of (what you call racist) jokes actually from Americans, and was not offended at all because I understand that some of them needed to travel more and read more books and stuff. In fact, I have got Anti-spanish jokes from, let me see… Chinese, Japanese, French, Swiss, Germans, English, Irish, Italians, Portuguese, Mexican, Ecuadorian, Peruvian, and many other Spaniards form other regions, and I/we have never felt offended. I returned the jokes, and to my memory, no one felt offended. We had a really good laugh because WE know and really practice the belief that we are all equal. But the only ones I have actually witnessed feeling superior to other nations have been poorly educated Americans. Sorry to say, but that is the truth. Very rarely you will find a Spaniard actually discriminating (robbing or exploiting) an immigrant. In the US… please…

You’ve heard of the fearsome team from Spain:
They persevered for Gold in vain.
Poised with confidence, unrestrained,
Their eyes betrayed the heart they feign.
“Friendly and harmless, simple and plain.
You read into it; it’s all in your brain.”
Such words of comfort they hope have regained
The misplaced trust ever more to attain.
Good humor they claimed they wish to retain,
But it all came under fire and rain.
In centuries passed, their glory has waned,
In clueless oblivion they choose to remain.
Shell-struck people of Asian terrain
Witness again the white man’s refrain.
Branded “sub-human”, they once were detained
In the confines of their master’s domain.
So goes the story of the team from Spain:
They persevere for support in vain.
Poised with resolve, but now restrained,
Their shame foreshadows all that they feign.
I am your slant-eye, but this I maintain:
My blood is as red as that in your vein.
My insides are torn, my emotions drained,
To hear you proclaim there’s no one in pain.

A poem as an answer,
an answer is encrypted,
assuming to be clever,
thinking he is better,
but no one gives a shit,
for the words mean only to the writer…
A rhyme is a chicken´s answer,
only a reminder,
of how stupid is some people,
of how racist are to themselves,
and how some people have no answers,
and how some people can´t understand we all are the same.
I am married to a Mexican,
in love with her I am,
with her I´ll live forever,
but a Spaniard I was born,
that a slant-eyes pseudo-poet,
would never understand,
since I am not racist and less a poet as you can see I am,
but only he is in fact.

Carlos, Carlos, Carlos…
No offense, but I have like no idea what you’re talking about. Your posts are so incomprehensible.
I’m sure you know, as an educated man, that the written word has to be carefully structured because, unlike the spoken word, it can very easily be misconstrued.
Here’s my take. Your poem (or “non-poem” by your own admission) is painful gibberish. On the other hand, Slant-eyed’s poem has rhythm, tempo, rhyme and meter. These are tools that the poet uses to convey his message, and Slant-eyed has successfully delivered a coherent one through his medium.
Now, whether you agree with his message or not, is totally up to you. You are entitled to your opinion. However, it does not change the fact that Slant-eyed’s poem is good, simply because it is well thought-out, well laid-out, and well presented.
Here’s your take. You can’t agree with his message, therefore, his poem “shit”. My friend, I cannot accept that premise.
Now, if you could help me out, I am laboring to grasp the message in your “non-poem”. Correct me if I’m wrong. You’re saying that because you are married to a Mexican, you are a racist. Am I right? Gee, I hope not.
As for your most recent post (dated 25 AUG), I can’t make heads or tails. Again, correct me if I’m wrong. You’re saying that if your aunt had a beard, she would be your uncle. Am I right, or am I right?
I can only assume that it’s one of two things. Either English is not your native language; or, every time you write a post you are so friggin’ wasted.
If my first assumption is right, I will not fault you. I’m sure you would sound like the great Carlos that you are, when you express yourself in your native language (which I’m guessing is Spanish). Unlike the little Carlitos you sound like, when you use English.
But if my second assumption is right, then Carlos, please, do us a favor and return to Earth! You can’t be GONE all the time; we miss you. Think about your poor wife, whom I reckon is a saint to put up with you.
Lastly, let me leave you with a thought. This may be hard to believe, but, whatever our differences, I think you are a decent fellow. On opposite sides of a fiery issue, I am only a Chink to your people, and you are only a Spic to mine.
But in real life, if I met you in Chinatown I would address you as a Spanish gentleman, and perhaps even ask you to join me for tea. Wouldn’t is be so cool, if you met me in Madrid Square and addressed me as a Chinese gentleman, and perhaps asked me to join you for a Corona beer?
Together, we will laugh at the world fighting and fussing over their falsely substantiated sense of superiority. Because we know better, you and I will embrace each other for what we are, with all our faults. We will celebrate our humanity with open arms, as I raise my glass and drink to you and you to me. Wouldn’t that be so cool?
It’s just a dream, I know. But a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
All the best, my friend.

First I am an american of a spanish family. In other words my family is originally from there. Having said that, some of the comments, thoughts, opinions that are posted here about Spain, my people, spaniards as a whole is a bunch of BS.
First of all, we have no reason right now to be pointing the finger USA…many people are pointing at us. Secondly, Spain are so racist right, they have not closed their borders as other European countries have for the immigrant. Spain is so racist ..right?, that is why a person that is born in Latin America or the Phillipines or any other country taht was part of the Spainsh Kingdom at some time is given the same rights as a Spaniard that is born in Spain. In other words they can go their get dual citizenship..have the goverments pay theri education and health because they are so racist…no wonder Joe said in his earlier comment….and I quote him “Los putos racistas del mundo. Matando Indios, Matando Colombianos, Cubanos, Bolivianos, Matando Gays, Matando culturas y todo lo que tocan y luego critican lo que desconocen”
Look this a bunch of bullshit that Spain are racist!! For crying out loud…do some searches regarding our history..we have been invaded and most of us possess the blood of the moors(arabs) thru our lines…and you think we are racist. I mean come on…africa is right next door!
Lets see who is racist..many countires that are part of European Union have a name for four Latin Mediterrnean Eurp Countires and the acronym was PIGS ..should I spell it out..PORTUGAL,ITALY,GREECE,SPAIN…so who is racist?
I know many people from many cultures that live in spain and do not feel that way…after all in Spain we are people of color. There are those of us spaniards that are white, those that are brown, those that are mixed with african..asian..bla bla bla. We were invaded by about 9 cultures.
To be honest, I have seen much more racism in the USA towards foreign invasion than in Spain. We are on our bandwagon about “clsoing the borders” …and yet Spain has not!!
So really I leave you with this….Who is more racist? And let the man without sin….cast the first stone!!
