Wherever you’re sitting and reading this, why don’t you give a warm applause and chest pound…now kiss your fingers and shoot a wink towards the sky…in honor of boxer Oscar Diaz and the fact that homeboy just woke up in a hospital bed in Texas after being in a coma for two-months.
Diaz had been in a coma for the past two months after being injured in a July 16 loss to Delvin Rodriguez. He collapsed after the 10th round and underwent emergency surgery that night for severe swelling and bleeding of his brain. “It’s very exciting to see Oscar open his eyes,” his mother, Theresa Diaz, said in the release. “He’s a fighter and I believe he will get better.”
Knock that mothaeffin’ coma out, brah! Lets all take that applause and turn it into a giant thumbs up for Diaz…who we hope will learn his lesson and never ever ever ever jump into a ring again. Because after reading what went on with him in the hospital, there’s no reason why you should risk your life again.
Jimenez said Diaz “nearly died three times” over the past two months, including the night of the fight when he “was perhaps minutes or seconds from dying” before doctors operated to remove a large portion of his skull. Then, three weeks after the injury, Jimenez said Diaz suffered “a complete system shutdown, kidneys, lungs and liver.”
Jimenez said Diaz’s critical-care team, led by Dr. Augusto Parra, was able to intervene and save him.
“They’ve done a terrific job,” Jimenez said.
Diaz’s condition has been upgraded from critical to stable. He was taken off the ventilator and is no longer in a coma, Jimenez said.
“He’s able to open his eyes and track movements,” he said. “He’s moving his limbs and tries to reach out to you.”
That’s a fight you want him to win.
