Gotta hand it to the RIAA. It sure knows how to ruin everyone’s fun. Its latest victim? Muxtape, which just announced its “comeback” plans. They’re pretty beat
Muxtape’s Justin Ouellette explains his plans to turn Muxtape into a promotional tool for new and unsigned bands. In and of itself there’s nothing wrong with that, but considering what the site used to be—a place where everyone could easily share their playlists for everyone to enjoy—this new development is quite disappointing.
In other words, no music from RIAA’d bands will be allowed on the new Muxtape, whenever that launches.
Ouellette had to go this route because of the RIAA’s strong arm tactics, which included getting Amazon to kick Muxtape off its AWS (“the cloud”) service. Without that, there’s no bandwidth to run this site. No bandwidth, no site.
It’s almost pointless to bitch about the RIAA these days, but when its boneheaded tactics snuff out all forms of innovation, you’re hard pressed to feign indifference.
