iPhone Rumor Du Jour: To Be Available On Verizon Wireless Next Year?

vzwiphone.jpg

The endless iPhonery continues, this time with a shout out to Verizon Wireless users. The rumor mill is buzzing with the possibility of the iPhone coming to Verizon Wireless sometime next year. This is good news for everyone, especially since AT&T’s coverage isn’t quite as good as Verizon Wireless’s in certain parts of the country. VZW may suck as a company, but God bless its coverage in the greater New York area.

So the rumor comes down to this: someone supposedly deep in the bowels of the VZW organization, or proper links to it, claims that the iPhone will move to the VZW next year. There’s several reasons for this, the primary one being that if Apple wants to seriously compete in the cellphone business, having the iPhone only available on AT&T is silly; Apple ignoring so many potential customers isn’t smart business.

Apple has also been hiring EVDO and CDMA folks left and right for a little while now. Verizon Wireless is a CDMA network, while AT&T (and T-Mobile) is GSM. For Apple to get its little phone working on Verizon Wireless, it’ll need all the help it can get.

But for now, we must caution, this could well be idle blog banter; Apple never reveals its intentions to anyone.
