Apparently the ten year anniversary of Mark McGuire breaking Roger Maris’ remarkable 61 HRs in a single-season record is coming up. But like most people who shy away from steroid users and cheaters, McGuire didn’t even have a clue it was coming up. Which is natural when you’re trying to distance yourself from being a cheater. Cheater. And in an interview this week, he decided to joke around about possibly coming back. Because all of us baseball lovers would sure love another nasty sore reminding us we’ve been duped over the last decade.

Today, McGwire says, he works out twice a day and still weighs 245 pounds. “I can still hit, if somebody wants me,” he said. “Now, wouldn’t that be a shocker?”

Yes it would. But it’s more of a shocker that the guy is naive enough to even joke around. Sure he has to provide a tone of indifference and manage a surge of integrity every now and then. It’s necessary for his sanity. But we don’t forget. Fans don’t forget. So, yes. It would be quite the shocker to see you in uniform Mark. We’re sure you’d love to bash elbows with your boy, too. You know, to remember the good ol’ days.
