Whas Happened In Sports Last Night

  • Champions League: Luiz Felipe Scolari isn’t getting too giddy about the other top table teams in the EPL just yet (it is a long season, after all), but he should be happy that his new Chelsea squad started their Champions League title run well. Frankie Lampard put in one of four goals his team scored against the French side, Bordeux. Next up for the Blues is an EPL slugfest with the Man U champs, who may or may not be bare chested by the time this weekend rolls around. Chelsea 4, Bordeaux 0 [Guardian UK]
  • MLB: Ahoy, maties. Seems like those scurvy Dodger dogs got the pitiful Pittsburgh Pirates just in time for the playoff hunt. Casey Blake homered and tripled and Manny Ramirez had three hits for the second straight night as Los Angeles won its 14th in 16 games. Their lead over Arizona is five with 11 to play. Dodgers 6, Pirates 2 [LA Times]
  • MLB: While the Mets are squandering away their lead over in the NL East, the Tampa Bay Rays are doing everything possible so it doesn’t happen to them in the AL East. Dioner Navarro’s ninth-inning RBI gave the Rays the win over their division rival Red Sox, which bumped their lead up to one game after being ahead of Boston by just percentage points earlier in the day.
