Whas Happened In Sports Last Night

  • Champions League:What is going on with Manchester United nowadays? The EPL champs are currently in 14th place in the standings and most people said what they were missing was Cristiano Ronaldo, which makes sense. He did score a kajillion goals last season. But in yesterday’s Champions League game, the Bingo stud was still working himself into shape as his Man U squad took a draw to Villareal in the first round of Champions League play. Still any team with Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez (and their combined $200 million salaries) on the pitch at the same time should be able to score once a game, right? • MLB: And the Metropolitans are just treading water now, aren’t they? Sure they beat the Nationals yesterday to keep pace with the surging Phillies, but if they’re struggling to beat Washington, are their heads on straight? They had to use big nights from Jose Reyes, who hit a lead off home run in the first, and Carlos Beltran who knocked in two dingers, to beat the woeful Nats. Does not bode well for their next 10 games against the likes of Chicago and Florida, even if they are at home. Mets 9, Nationals 7 [NY Times]
  • MLB: So here’s a bright spot in the Yankees sad season—Alex Rodriguez became the first player to hit 35 homers and 100 RBIs in 12 straight seasons, one more than Babe Ruth. He did it during the Yankees victory over the White Sox, which means it’ll get buried in the New York sports pages under the huge deflating news known as the Mets season.
