Manny Pacquiao has never fought at the 147lb weight-class. In fact, he has to jump two weight divisions in order to reach the negotiated weight he intends to fight Oscar De La Hoya in. That in itself is an impressive feat from a guy who began his career boxing horse jockeys at 106lbs. But Oscar De La Hoya hasn’t hit the 147lb mark since 2001. So, a Mexicano, hefty because of a luxurious lifestyle intended to fatten him up (in the wallet, mostly), will endure the rigorous training necessary to shed off almost 20 pounds. So, what’s the downfall if he is, say, a few pounds overweight?
Six-division champion Oscar de la Hoya reportedly agreed to pay a $3 million-penalty for every pound in excess of the welterweight limit of his mega-fight with boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao in December. A report posted on SportsNews.ph said this was revealed by Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin Gacal after his talk with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum Saturday morning, Manila time.
Ideally you want both fighters to participate at the same weight so controversy is held at a minimum, but this is boxing. So we wouldn’t be surprised if Oscar writes a $9 million dollar check to throw into the pot because he couldn’t stave off those last minute California burritos. Lets hope not because the last thing Oscar De La Hoya would want, besides losing his “retirement” bout, is to be held in controversy. Frankly, he’s probably going to make more money in his post-boxing career than he ever did boxing. His business tactics speak for themselves. And we can’t wait until he finds the next, new youngster to take his place. Just, please, don’t give them a recording deal.
