In relation to the Chicago White Sox, the Mets’ destruction of their fan base’s psyche yesterday was kind. Why? Because unlike the South Siders, their collapse down the stretch has surpassed the season. Ozzie Guillen’s team is playing the Detroit Tigers today to decide the fate of the AL Central—win and they force a game with the Minnesota Twins, who are a half a game up on them. Lose and they stay home. and for some—like Guillen—it may mean having to go into self-exile for a while.
“If we lose this thing, I’m going to ask [Chairman] Jerry Reinsdorf to give me the private plane,” Guillen said Saturday. I don’t have the guts to look at the people’s faces in O’Hare Airport or Midway after this season.”
Strange sentiment for someone who, later in the piece, gives a veiled threat of violence to fans who boo his team and shit talk from the stands.
“Sometimes when I hear those things I say, ‘I wish [I was] in Caracas (Venezuela) right now,’ because then my boys would be right behind [me]. But I don’t blame them.”
Hm. Ozzie’s boys from Caracas or
