Who Are The Coaches Who Didn't Put USC At Number 1?

When the number one-ranked college team utterly destroys the fifth-ranked team, you would assume that everyone would agree on their superiority over everyone else (well, unless that team is USC and you’re a UCLA fan). Well that team is USC, but after blowing Ohio State University by 33 on Saturday, it seems that four of the 61 coaches that vote in the USA Today Poll don’t think they’re the best team in the country. Two votes went to Georgia, who only won because the South Carolina player who was about to tie the game with seconds left coughed up the ball at the goal line; one vote went to Oklahoma, who routed unranked Washington; and the last vote went to Florida, who didn’t even play. Luckily the LA Times’ Chris Dufresne is on the job and breaks down who these dissenting voices are.

Georgia received two first-place votes from the coaches, and Oklahoma and Florida got one vote each. The coaches reveal only their final ballots, so we’re only guessing that Georgia’s votes came from Bulldogs Coach Mark Richt and the Southeastern Conference coach who just lost to Georgia: Steve Spurrier of South Carolina.
We’re also going to guess Washington Coach Tyrone Willingham voted Oklahoma No. 1 after losing, 55-14, to the Sooners, and that Urban Meyer (Florida coach) or Phil Fulmer (Tennessee coach facing Florida this week) put the Gators at No. 1.

Well, all of those make sense, especially Spurrier’s. He had a habit of giving the horrible Duke football team a vote every pre-season as a thanks for his first coaching gig. This season he didn’t but we guess he’s trying to throw his vote away another way.
