World's Oldest Man Tomoji Tanabe Turns 113, Is Awesome

You ever wonder what the world will be like in 70 years? Ok, maybe 50? Probably not. Because it’s likely we won’t live beyond 75. And even if we do, our marbles will be drifting on a bed of pork and booze. But Tomoji Tanabe of Japan has been blessed with everlasting life. And he’s just turned 113 years old, which means he was born in 1895!

The world’s oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday Thursday in southern Japan, telling reporters he wants to live another five years. Tomoji Tanabe, who was born Sept. 18, 1895, received birthday gifts, flowers and $1,000 cash from the mayor of his hometown of Miyakonojo, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu. Tanabe told reporters he wants to live “another five years or so,” according to city spokesman Akihide Yokoyama. That was a slight downgrade from last year, when he said he wanted to live “for infinity.”

$1000? That isn’t even $10 for every year. Come on! Anyway, Tanabe was born the same year as Buster Keaton, but outlasted him by 42 years. And he was also born 15 days after the first professional American football game “between the Latrobe YMCA and the Jeannette Athletic Club. (Latrobe wins 12-0).” We hear John McCain played in that game.

Footnote: Japan is estimated to have 1 million 100-year-olds by 2050. Wowza!
