Francisco and Cayetano Ordonez are the kind of guys you love to hate—they’re rich, super-good looking and the toast of Spain. But then you remember the reason that is (other than the good looking part) is because they’re the best bullfighters in the business, meaning that about 60 times a year, they get into a ring and kill 1,000-pound living hamburgers charging at them. They’re like the Eli and Peyton Manning of Spain, only if Archie Manning had been Joe Namath and they weren’t so… ugly. 60 Minutes had an awesome piece on them and their legacy, which stretches back to their great-grandfather, a legendary bullfighter Hemingway modeled Pedro Romero, the matador in The Sun Also Rises, after. Yeesh, talk about expectations.
But they’re up to the task being as glamorous as the role requires. Francisco is the older brother, and 13-year veteran, who was married to Spanish royalty. Cateyano can’t go anywhere without women just pulling him into their faces, and he’s also the face of Armani. But their life isn’t just filled with adoring fans and modeling contracts, but the real possibility of death those 60 times they enter the ring. Their father, Paquirri, died in the ring, which is the reason their mother sent them to the U.S. as kids to become anything but bullfighters. Unfortunately for her it seems that it is in their blood and left to answer questions like this.
Just before he left the room, he got dressed for a day’s work, helped into his glimmering suit of lights - an outfit just like the one his father and grandfather wore.
“Terrible question, but when you leave the hotel room, does it occur to you that you might not come back?” [60 Minutes reporter Bob] Simon asks.
“Always,” Cayetano admits. “That’s the last moment we have by ourselves before going to the ring.”
This is the part they call foreshadowing.
Cateyano turned out to be okay after four days in intensive care and another month on his back. Francisco also got hurt later on, but both vowed to return to the ring when they heal. Apparently modeling and marrying royalty doesn’t have the same thrill bullfighting does. Who knew?
