We love David Beckham’s game… and we’re not talking about his work on the pitch. He’s learned embrace whatever audience is adoring him at that moment—whether it’s throngs of women throwing themselves at him in Japan, L.A. or Madrid, or Snoop Dogg. But he’s also held fiercely to his status as the world’s most important straight gay icon, relishing in the fact. Hey, gay people buy jerseys, too, to paraphrase Michael Jordan. But it never seems like a marketing ploy, just always Becks.
When asked about being labelled the “gayest straight man in Britain and the blackest white man” David said: “Yes, I like that. When someone said that about me, it made me laugh and I was quite proud of it.
What’s he’s talking about in images after the jump.
“To have that kind of effect on so many different people around the world, I was honoured. When people talk to me about being a gay icon I think of it as a great honour.” The 33-year-old sportsman insists he doesn’t regret any of his fashion choices.
He added to GQ magazine: “If I see something I like I wear it. No matter what I think people will are going to say about me. I don’t do it for a statement, I do it because I like wearing different things.”
Or, you know… nothing. Which is fine we guess. There used to be a time when athletes used to shun their gay fans, but Becks bucked that trend and good for him. When you’re that wanted around the world regardless of gender, race or nationality, you ride that pony until the moment your body fat percentage goes above 4%.
