In times as rough as these, it’s good to have a sports team riding high. That’s why the Los Angeles City Council has approved a resolution to request federal legislation (because, you know, the Feds don’t have anything else to worry about now) to make the area surrounding Dodger Stadium officially known as Dodgertown. And if you’ve ever tried to drive out of the Dodger Stadium parking lot, you know driving back onto Sunset takes as long as driving back from Temecula sometimes, so it’s pretty apropos.
The Dodgertown initiative coincides with a $500-million makeover expected to be completed by the stadium’s 50th anniversary in 2012. Once complete, [area councilman Ed] Reyes said Dodgertown would indeed look like “a little town,” with a promenade, restaurants, shopping and a museum… The new designation would affect only Dodgers property, he said. So the park’s neighbors won’t suddenly find themselves living in Dodgertown.
Irony alert, considering when the O’Malley family moved the Dodgers from Brooklyn to LA, they used eminent domain to move every Chicano family out of the area and demolished their homes to build Dodger Stadium. But still, they brought on Jackie Robinson and Fernandomania, so we can’t be too mad at them… can we?
