You got asshole in my jackass! You got jackass in my asshole!
This is the only way we can possibly describe the unholy alliance that has been formed between New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and his Dallas Cowboys counterpart Jerry Jones. The two have formed a new company, Legends Hospitality Management, that will move to upgrade the food and other concession offerings in sports stadiums to ensure they are of the highest possible quality. Hank Steinbrenner wants to “raise the bar,” which almost certainly means we’ll all be paying more for our overcooked hamburger and domestic light adult beverages.
“The old model of stadium concessions is broken,” stated Hal Steinbrenner, Co-Chairman of the New York Yankees. “Fans want and deserve a better experience for their sports entertainment dollar. Working with Legends to leverage the talent and experience resident in the Yankees’ and Cowboys’ organizations will enable us to set a higher bar for sports franchises while delivering greater value to fans. When the new Yankee Stadium opens for the 2009 season, our fans will be able to experience first-hand the enhancements to our menus, concessions, retail operations and fan spaces that Legends has overseen.”
If anything is broken when it comes to stadium concessions, it’s the jacked-up prices fans are forced to endure. We can’t speak for either Dallas or the Bronx, but we know that a beer at Giants Stadium runs $7.75 on the low end, and that’s before any tip you might leave. Both the Cowboys and the Yankees are opening new stadiums next year, and that always seems to be the best time to reach into the pockets of fans and dig for even more.
Aside from the price gouging, we now have the official pairing between two of the biggest jerks in recent sports history, Jones and Steinbrenner. Wonderful. Whatever aspirations the two have to build up stadium concessions to new, never-before-reached heights, consider this: the company will be managed by a former Pizza Hut executive. Open your wallets, everyone, it’s time for a $10.75 personal pan pie, topped with glorified ketchup and meat that’s one step above dog food.
