Spain's National Soccer Team Gets A Booze-Soaked Thank You

So other than that whole Olympic basketball mess, Spain made a huge splash on the international sports scene this year. Perhaps the biggest coup was the national soccer team picking up the Euro 2008 cup, their first major title in 44 years. So with that and the number one FIFA ranking, what else do you get a team that is sitting on cloud 9? Well, how about beer? Lots of it.

The Spanish players will each receive their weight in beer from sponsor Cruzcampo after winning Euro 2008 at Austria and Switzerland in June. Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina will be the happiest after tipping the scales at 95.6 kilograms (211 pounds). Villarreal winger Santi Cazorla is the lightest player on the squad at 70.4 kilograms (155 pounds).
The grand total? 1,742 liters for the 23 players on the roster - the equivalent of 5,200 bottles.

This would be awesome if it slipped into the soccer world as a common occurrence that sponsors would give teams their weight in whatever they sold when they won championships. Real Madrid would get their weight in betting money at bwin.com, Inter Milan would get it in Pirelli tires and Manchester United would get their weight in AIG bankruptcy filings.
